British Buses

1920s Double Deckers

During the 1920s there was rapid development in motor bus design both in Britain and abroad. A.E.C. (Associated Equipment Company) held the distinction of being the first British manufacturer to build a bus chassis fitted with a low-height chassis frame: the model in question was the 'NS' type, first built in 1922, a painting of which is presented below.

Within only five years however this model was to be rendered obsolete with the introduction by Leyland Motors of their famous 'TITAN' model which was built to a completely new design by John Rackham, Leyland’s chief engineer.

Rackham was head-hunted by A.E.C. and by 1929 he had designed the all new 'REGENT' model which was to become as famous as the 'TITAN'.

Other manufacturers including Bristol, Daimler, Dennis and Guy, were also kept busy developing new and refining existing models.
